And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.
– Genesis 5:24, 6:9
It is interesting that the first man recorded to have walked with God in the Bible was not Enoch. The Bible states in Genesis 3 that Adam heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the evening but he and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord. It was obviously the custom for them to walk with God but when they did not come to walk with Him on that day, He called out to Adam and asked where he was. His response is a clear indication of why he had not come to walk with God on that fateful day; sin had separated him from God and they could no longer fit into the picture of holiness that God represented. It is no wonder, therefore, that Amos 3:3 says, “Can two walk together except they be agreed?” May we always be in agreement with God.
After the fall, Enoch was the next person to walk with God. His grandson, Noah, is also recorded to have walked with God and, for these two people to have walked with God, it means that they must have agreed with God. In other words, they walked in the ways of God and agreed with His Word. They did not walk in the counsel of the ungodly nor did they sit in the seat of the scornful (Psalm 1:1). They were men that walked uprightly in their generation and who worked righteousness, speaking the truth in their hearts always (Psalm 15:1–5).
When we draw near to God, He will draw near to us (James 4:8). However, God is a holy God and cannot look on iniquity because He is of purer eyes than to behold evil; he cannot look on wickedness (Habakkuk 1:13). Sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34) and it separates us from God (Isaiah 59:1–2). When we walk in sin, we cannot walk with God. Therefore, if we are to walk with Him, we must be like Enoch and Noah, who separated themselves unto God in their generation (2 Corinthians 6:17).
Prayer Points:
Lord, help me to separate myself unto you.
Give me the grace to walk uprightly in my generation.
